The LOMO Lubitel 166B is a highly popular, medium format, twin-lens camera hailing from the LOMO factory in St. Petersburg, Russia. Known for its simplicity and reliability, the 166B was produced from about 1980 until 1990 with a staggering 900,000 units made during this period. The camera is characterized by its simple, manual setting of shutter and aperture, and a manual shutter arming. The Lubitel 166B distinguishes itself from its predecessors by using a condenser screen in the waist level finder, which aids in brighter imaging.
Coupled with a 75mm f/4.5 Triplet lens, the Lubitel 166B is known to produce punchy images with good contrast and saturation. Despite its simplicity, it offers more sophistication and control than a Holga or box camera, making it an excellent choice for photographers venturing into medium format photography.
The Lubitel series was revived in 2008 by Lomography as the Lubitel 166+ Universal, further cementing its cult status among photography enthusiasts.
